NYCSE centers are a wonderful example of "upcycling." Built using repurposed 40' steel shipping containers, recycled windows and doors and steel awnings made from segments cut out of the containers, almost nothing will be wasted in the construction of these sustainable energy centers! NYCSE centers are completely net zero and run entirely on 100% clean, green electricity collected by a solar array that sits atop the center, demonstrating how sustainable energy works and how it can be used in our everyday lives. NYCSE centers are also incredibly multifunctional and serve the purpose of
charging electric vehicles and devices on-site, providing an integrated hands-on
learning and teaching facility, and exhibiting the latest advances in green
construction technology, products and approaches.
Phase I (Winter 2010 / ‘11): Beautiful Earth Group, a Brooklyn based sustainable energy developer, donates New York City’s first solar powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station to Brooklyn Bridge Park to charge the park’s security and maintenance vehicles.
Phase II (Fall 2011): Beautiful Earth completes work on NYCSE, designed by Gensler, by “upcycling” the solar
charging station and adding containers to become NYC’s first net-zero educational facility. In addition to supplying all of NYCSE’s power, the EV charging component is redesigned to show visitors how solar energy is collected, stored and inverted for use by the park for charging vehicles and electric equipment.
